Hauppauge, NY: (May 3, 2008,) The Harvard Nichols Firefighter of the year award is routinely presented to a member of this Department for actions which occurred during an emergency situation. This year this recipient has demonstrated the true readiness of a firefighter. Firefighter Shawn Mooney was attending a school trip and after returning to his room through the pool area with his fellow classmates, they noticed an unknown teenage male on the bottom of the pool in the deep end. Firefighter Mooney and one other individual entered the pool and removed the victim to the pool side were both parties evaluated the victim and found him to be unconscious and not breathing. CPR was initiated by these individuals while rescue crews were notified by fellow classmates. Prior to the arrival of local EMS a pulse and breathing was restored. The victim of this drowning did make a full recovery. www.hauppaugefire.org

Hauppauge, (July 29, 2007) With dollars secured from Leg. John Kennedy to the Hauppauge Fire Department for voice miters, fire department officials invited Leg. Kennedy to an onsite training in the use of this valuable equipment. The money used from his grant went towards voice miters for the masks of our firefighters. The fire department purchased approx. 30 of these devices that are attached to the breathing masks and allows the firefighters the capability of communicating clearly with each other while wearing their masks. The device amplifies the voice so it can be heard.
