Hauppauge, NY: (June 06, 2005): It was over 50 years that the Central Islip Community Ambulance Service was made available to the residents of Hauppauge. Thus becoming the service we now know as the Central Islip-Hauppauge Volunteer Ambulance. It was the efforts of Vivian Pettit and her husband, Gerald, helped to found the Central Islip Ambulance Service more than 50 years ago. The ambulance service was established because of the death of a little boy resulting from injuries from automobile accident. A commercial ambulance from Amityville had to be called to assist. The wrecked cars were picked up promptly, but it was hours before the ambulance arrived for the young boy. The Central Islip-Hauppauge Volunteer Ambulance is the 2nd busiest ambulance service in Suffolk County, NY. They receive over 4000 calls per year and continue to provide a quality, caring and responsive pre-hospital emergency health care to the communities of Central Islip, Hauppauge, Islandia, and the Hauppauge Industrial Park. For more information on CIHVA or to become a member visit their website at www.CIHVA.org. 'Garden Area of 'Sweetbriar Nature Center' is restored'
Hauppauge, NY: May 3, 2005: On April 15th, 2005 Brian Christopher Ratkus received the highest honor in scouting. Brian received the rank of Eagle Scout by completing his project of restoring a garden area at the 'Sweetbriar Nature Center' to its original potential and growth. In addition, he put up a post and rail fence to protect a butterfly area. 'It was an honor to attend this very special ceremony. I have a very special and personal appreciation for the meaning of this honor. My sons Michael and David both achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. I have seen the tremendous amount of time, effort, and dedication that goes into attaining this prestigious award. My son Michael's project was a memorial at the Hauppauge Middle School to Tyler Lynn, a teacher who passed away suddenly. My son David's project was to create a well house for the Smithtown Historical Society,' stated Chief Gagliardi.
